His Crime, As It Were

Around 30,000 Thais work in Israel.

In 2019 Phonsawan Pinakalo a Thai man in his twenties, went to work in a kibbutz three miles from the Gaza border.

On 7 October, 2023 the kibbutz was overrun by Hamas militants.

Pinakalo was caught, cut with a knife, and kidnapped and taken to Gaza.

For 50 days he was chained to a wall, beaten repeatedly, had a bucket that was never emptied for a toilet, and was given a can of tuna a day to eat.

He dreamed of death to release him from his hunger.

His ‘crime’, as it were, was that he worked in Israel, for Israelis, for Jews.

In November, he was released as part of a hostage deal.
