I read that by 1942, two million ethnic Germans had been settled in Poland. To make room for them, some eight million Jews and Poles were moved into the General Government, the area of Poland under Nazi military control.

Their places were taken by ethnic Germans who in the words of the German Government had been ‘repatriated’ from around the Baltic and from Volhynia and Galicia in western Ukraine.
